In any negotiation both power and interest shape the dynamic and outcome. As humans we're not likely to give away power for the sake of being "fair" but we can broaden our view of interest, so called enlightened self interest. For me the motivation comes from thinking in systems terms about the long term benefits of creating partners that are motivated to be supportive and creating incentives for all parties to do the right thing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One challenge we often have as entrepreneurs is that short term survival can and often must override the desire to create more sustainable economic relationships out of the gate. It tends to lead to the "Wimpy" (Popeye not character reference) school of negotiating in the video "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" My guess is that as entrepreneurs we often assume everything is a survival choice and aren't necessarily good at judging which situation really require the short term override. I'd bet far fewer than we think.
